Brothers work was shown, at Pulse, by Tomlinson Kong Contemporary. It was in a sort of out of the way spot so even if you went to Pulse you might have missed it. It is a very attractive, decorative piece.

Pudendal Gravitas In Abstracta Filipino artist Manuel Ocampo's work is somewhere between graffiti and iconography. The pieces here maybe show more of the former than the latter but if you check out more of his work at Tyler Rollins Fine Art you will get the idea. Ocampo was the subject of two solo exhibitions at Tyler Rollins Fine Art. The most recent of these, The View Through the Bull of a Manual Laborer of Menagerie Gussied Over White Ground: 20 Years of Self-Loathing and Intestinal Mishaps, which ran from November 8 to December 22, 2012. This ran at the same time as Ocampo's work was being shown at Pulse Miami. Ocampo is also the subject of a short documentary film, God is My Copilot, directed by Phillip Rodriguez and produced by Tom Patchett. You can find out more about the film and the artist at his website, www.manuelocampo.org. Paul Pretzer's work was shown at Pulse by Mark Straus Gallery (299 Grand Street, NYC). Pretzer was born in Estonia and now works in Dresden, Germany. He was the subject of an exhibit at the gallery at the end of 2011, The Seventh Skill. His works are, at the same time, whimsical and haunting at the same time. They are mythic and a bit surreal. Find out more about Pretzer HERE. Mark Straus Gallery, located on the Lower East Side. Their focus is contemporary art--especially new artists who haven't shown work in the USA before. It is interesting that Marc Straus is not some guy with an MFA but a professor of medicine and a poet. He and his wife Livia, founded The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in addition to this gallery. They have been art collectors for decades. Untitled by Summer Mann Rose Gallery, in Santa Monica, focuses on modern and contemporary artists. Some of those artists were on display at Pulse Miami 2012. The gallery specializes in photographs and works on paper and these are all one or the other. The gallery also works to have ongoing relationships with both artists and clients (neither is a surprising thing but they make a point of mentioning it). O.K. my records SHOW Matthew Burrows was shown by London's Vigo Gallery at Pulse Miami 2012. I am pretty sure they did. Burrows is from the United Kingdom, currently residing in Sussex. When you think of his work think "sex, prayer and fine draughtsmanship." You will also notice his work has a "fluid" quality. There seems to be an ebb and flow between objects--even objects clearly defined as separate. Object is perhaps a poor choice of words but it is somewhere between an object and a form. Kent Dorn is from South Carolina and his piece, Asylum (2011) was shown at Pulse Miami by Freight + Volume (New York City). This is getting near the time where I stare dumbstruck at photos I took of marvelous pieces by artists like Dorn and resort to cribbing from the gallery website. You can do that yourself (and read some neat interviews with Dorn) HERE. Why do I start doing this? I have used the same adjectives too many times. This work caught my eye, it has a perspective and a depth (literally) that is unique. The pieces are three dimensional but not because of any accordion vision (who popularized that a couple years ago? I would have remembered when I started posting this Art Basel week stuff). It is mixed media on canvas. The color of Dorn’s work (in general as well as Asylum specifically) also leaps out at you. The piece is somewhere between reality and a cartoon, somewhere between sense and extrasense. Go see his work whenever you get a shot. He lives in Houston so if you are in that great Texan city be sure to keep an eye out for him. Pieces by Claire Kerr and Ralph Fleck were shown at Pulse Miami 2012 by Purdy Hicks Gallery, London. Portrait and Label (After Petrus Christus) to the right and Chipped Crockery are both by Kerr and works produced in 2012. Both are likewise oil on gesso panel. I regret the blurriness of Portrait and Label. Kerr is an English artist, educated at Magdalen College, Oxford University and at the Wimbeldon School of Art. You can find out more about her HERE. Below Chipped Crockery is Fleck's Feldstuck 13/VIII which is oil on canvas. The closer view is to give an idea as to the texture of the work. Fleck is a German artist educated at the State Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe. He is currently professor for painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, Nuremberg. Find out more about him and his work HERE. Allison Schulnik’s painting, Ariel #2, was shown at Pulse Miami 2012 by Mark Moore Gallery out of Culver City, California. Schulnik is an artist working with paint, paper and film. This painting is a wonderful oil on linen. It is a large piece (90 X 60 inches) and the second photo shows the relief. Lots of paint used here! Schulnik is a native of San Diego and received her BFA in experimental animation from CalArts. She currently lives in Los Angeles. 2013 will see an exhibition of the artist’s work at the Laguna Art Museum. Find out more about her and see moe work at www.allisonschulnik.com. Catherine Howe first exhibited her work back in 1987 at White Columns (she was later Associate Director there). She left in 1995 to focus on her art. She has taught at Pennsylvania State University and a number of other prestigious universities. This piece, Proserpina (Kitty, Kitty), was shown at Pulse Miami 2012 by Von Lintel Gallery, New York. Find out more about Catherine Howe HERE and more about Von Lintel Gallery HERE. These pieces by Federico Solmi were shown at Pulse Miami 2012 by Luis De Jesus, Los Angeles. Solmi's work makes use of video components. Sometime the video is nearly the entire piece and in others it is an accent. He uses drawing, painting, video, sculpture and more in his work. Solmi is another one of those artists whose work is unmistakeably his. His style is a signature. These pieces are surreal commentaries on and satire of the modern world. He was born in Italy and he currently lives in New York City. |
